Forest Practices Board News Release: Taan Passes Forestry Audit
An audit of Taan Forest Limited Partnership’s tree farm licence 60 and Taan Forest Ltd.’s forest licence A87661 on Haida Gwaii has found the company complied with almost all requirements of the Forest and Range Practices Act (FRPA) and the Wildfire Act.

Taan Forest welcomes the Forest Practices Board to Haida Gwaii to conduct a routine General Audit on Taan Operations relating to Provincial Legislation Requirements on TFL 60 and FLTC A87661 the week of September 20th to 24th.
Taan Forest Trained for Wildfire Safety and Suppression
All Taan staff and contractors who may fight wildfire must have annual wildfire safety and suppression training. On July 9th, 2021, we held our most recent wildfire training, and we currently have over 60 trained persons within the Taan Forest organization.

The Council of the Haida Nation, Canadian Coast Guard, BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy and Taan Forest were the Unified Command who oversaw the Foss 153 Diesel Spill Diinan Kahlii Dinan Bay, Haida Gwaii.

Notice is hereby given that Taan Forest has received a major amendment approval to their approved Forest Stewardship Plan for TFL 60 and FLC A87661 adding new licenses A97524 and FNWL N1G (The Haida Tenure) without having been made publicly available for review and comment.

Foss 153 Diesel Spill Dinan Bay Haida Gwaii - May 14, 2020
Sampling and SCAT (Shoreline Cleanup and Assessment Technique) surveys are now complete. There has been no observed fish kills by response personnel, sampling personnel, or shoreline assessment personnel. Samples have been taken in accordance with the approved sampling plan and are being analyzed by the lab and the data collated. Once this data has been reviewed by the Environmental Unit and Unified command, which are made up of representatives of the Council of Haida Nation, the Federal Government, the Provincial Government, and Taan Forest, the results will be released.

At Diinan Kahlii Dinan Bay between 01:00 and 05:00 April 22, 2020, a valve feeding diesel to the electrical generator failed on the Toba Barge owned by Taan Forest. Consequently, an estimated 4500 liters of diesel leaked onto the deck of the barge and into the ocean near the dryland sort.
First Nation Woodland Licence Management Plan Public Review
Notice is hereby given that Taan Forest is submitting a First Nation Woodland Licence Management Plan (FNWL) to convert the Haida Tenure FLC A87661 to a First Nation Woodland Licence FNWL N1G.
The Management Plan is necessary to enact the First Nation Woodland Licence and replace FLC A87661 which expires in September 2020.
Forest Stewardship Council® Certification Public Review and Comments
Taan Forest LP (Taan) is certified under the Forest Stewardship Council®(FSC®) BC-Regional Forest Management Standard (FSC Trademark License: FSC® C104355).
As part of the FSC® commitments, Taan has recently completed the 2018 Annual Monitoring Report and made some minor changes to the FSC®Management Plan to incorporate feedback from the Council of the Haida Nation.
Taan Forest Stewardship Plan - Major Amendment
Taan Forest is submitting a major amendment to their 2018 -2022 Approved FSP for CHN and Provincial Government Approval.
The Amendment is required for the inclusion of Intermediate Entry Cutting Stocking standards. Approval of this major amendment will allow Taan Forest to harvest in second growth stands without having to create a clear cut and utilizing even aged stocking standards currently approved in Taan’s FSP.
The approval also allows us to move forward on our promise of finding alternative and innovative harvest methods on Haida Gwaii while complying with provincial laws.
